How to Harness the Power of Momentum in Business

Momentum is one of those concepts in business – and in life – that everyone grasps at a basic level, but is rarely studied, thought of or reflected on at a deeper level.

At its core, momentum is your current trajectory based off of focused energy, for better or worse.

Positive energy creates momentum towards opportunity, which delivers happiness, while negative energy creates momentum towards failure, and then misery.

The thing about momentum is you’re always heading in one direction or the other, whether it feels like it or not. We’re energetic beings and energy never stays stationary. As the saying goes, “objects in motion tend to stay in motion”.

Positive momentum is the direction we’d all like to be heading. However, it takes significantly longer to build, than it does to destroy. It’s not a switch to flip. You can spend an entire year generating amazing positive momentum towards opportunity, only to have it yanked away in a second, either from your own ill-advised decisions or external factors outside of your control.

Just like a balloon, it takes a lot more effort to blow it up than it does to burst it.

Understanding these concepts around momentum – what it is, how it works and where you are within it – is everything. It’s at the center of all the cliches like ‘the universe’, ‘fortune favors the bold’, karma, etc.

To further understand your relationship with momentum, ask yourself the following:

Which way is your momentum heading, how fast is it moving, and how does this compare to your previous instances of positive or negative momentum in your life?
Does stationary (or the illusion of stationary) energy within yourself mean that you’re placing your future up for grabs, as environmental factors will ultimately dictate the direction one way or another?
How long will it take – realistically – to correct your momentum, or accelerate it to where you’d like to be, and what energy items need to be addressed in order to do so?

Having a deeper understanding of your momentum allows you to ride the positive wave better, prevent obstacles before they appear, and develop a deeper perspective of yourself, your business and your life.

It’s a very powerful force to harness, yet also very, very delicate.

Therefore, it must be managed with great care and understanding.

But – like anything else – it’s hard to care for something if you’ve given it no thought.

Hence the reason for this post.
